Position Overview

The Data Protection Engineer (Journeyman) is responsible for supporting the design, implementation, administration, and operational maintenance of enterprise data protection, backup, recovery, and disaster recovery solutions supporting mission-critical federal systems. This role provides technical expertise for enterprise backup and recovery operations, ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of organizational data assets.

The successful candidate will possess hands-on experience with Commvault technologies, hold an active Commvault certification, and demonstrate experience supporting enterprise data protection environments in a secure federal setting. This position works collaboratively with infrastructure, storage, virtualization, network, cybersecurity, and systems engineering teams to maintain and enhance enterprise data protection capabilities across a predominantly on-premises, highly virtualized enterprise environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Configure, administer, monitor, and maintain enterprise data protection solutions utilizing Commvault technologies.
  • Support daily backup, recovery, replication, and disaster recovery operations across large-scale on-premises and VMware virtualized enterprise environments
  • Monitor backup environments and ensure successful completion of backups, restorations, and recovery activities.
  • Respond to data protection-related service requests and incidents, performing troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and issue resolution.
  • Support migration efforts from legacy backup technologies, including Avamar, to enterprise Commvault solutions.
  • Assist in implementing and maintaining data backup, retention, archival, and recovery strategies in accordance with federal regulations and organizational policies.
  • Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution activities.
  • Collaborate with systems, storage, virtualization, network, and cybersecurity teams to support data protection initiatives and integrations across predominantly on-premises infrastructure.
  • Conduct routine assessments, audits, and health checks of backup, storage, and VMware-based data protection infrastructure.
  • Develop and maintain operational reports related to backup success rates, recovery readiness, and system performance.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, standard operating procedures, recovery procedures, and system configuration records.
  • Ensure compliance with federal security requirements, data handling regulations, and organizational policies.
  • Participate in a 24x7 on-call rotation and provide after-hours support as required.

Required Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Additional relevant experience may be substituted for formal education requirements where permitted by contract.

Experience

  • Minimum four (4) years of experience supporting enterprise data protection, backup, and recovery environments.
  • Experience administering and supporting Commvault backup and recovery solutions.
  • Experience supporting enterprise backup and recovery operations within medium to large-scale on-premises and VMware virtualized IT environments.
  • Experience with backup monitoring, troubleshooting, and recovery procedures.
  • Experience supporting disaster recovery planning, testing, and execution activities.
  • Experience protecting virtual machines, enterprise storage systems, and mission-critical workloads within highly available on-premises data center environments.

Certifications

  • Active Commvault Certification.
  • Additional industry certifications such as Security+, VMware, Microsoft, cloud certifications, or other relevant technical certifications are desirable.

Security Clearance
